General Dentistry – Underbite

An underbite in horses occurs when the lower incisors are slightly extended beyond the occlusal surface of the upper incisors. The cheek teeth are also affected and shifted an equal distance often creating over-eruptions (hooks) of the first lower cheek teeth and the last upper cheek teeth.

Underbite of a 4 yr old Percheron mare. Also the incisors are misaligned and there is hypertrophy of the gum tissue around the lower incisors.

Underbite with an unusual wear pattern. Note the white lower central incisors where the tonge constantly licks while the darker stained teeth have no tongue movement. This horse’s tongue goes out and down only. It is also pushing the gum line down at the root causing a receeding line and a bunching of the gum into a ridge.
