Cheek Teeth – Calculus (Tarter)

Tartar, or calculus, forms on the teeth of some horses but not on the teeth of others.  Sometimes it is on one canine, sometimes all four, but most commonly found on the lower canines.  It can also be found on the incisors and rarely on the cheek side of the upper first few cheek teeth. However, they all have in common that tarter always appears at the gum line first.

I believe the existence of the tartar is protective and should be considered an early indicator of the development of EOTRH.  Please read the posts on EOTRH.
